520			_aThe third edition of this manual was an instant success. It was well received by both teachers and students. Most of the experiments included in the third edition stood to the scrutiny of laboratories. Presentation of experiments in a lucid and straight forward manner was observed to be the merit of the third edition. However, that edition has now become several years old. During this period rapid developments have taken place with regard to instrumentation and modification of existing experimental protocols. Simplicity, accuracy and reliability in experimental protocols are the demands of present day laboratories. Keeping these developments in view, we felt the need to revise and update the manual. Indeed, we have received such type of signals from user fraternity of the manual. Keeping the basic frame work undisturbed, we tried to revise, update and enlarge this new edition. A large number of experiments are added covering different disciplines of microbiology. Efforts were made to give equal weightage to all the disciplines so much so that it gives holistic coverage of all aspects of microbiology. Colour plates are provided, to support and correlate the experimental observations. We hope that this edition will also be received well as was the case for third edition.
