Department of Social Work (Delhi School of Social Work) University of Delhi, celebrates 75 years of committed academic engagement (1946–2021). The Department was founded in 1946 as the National YWCA School of Social Work at Isabella Thouborn College, a reputed Women’s College in Lucknow. It was in 1947 that the School shifted to Delhi and was affiliated to the University of Delhi in 1948 as Delhi School of Social Work. It was taken over by the University of Delhi in 1979 and became its Department of Social Work.
The first batch of students from the Department had met Mahatma Gandhi and the best written resolutions of the social work students were put together and gifted as the first copy of the accepted oath to the Mahatma and which became our first oath as social work professionals. The Platinum Jubilee celebrations of the Department coincide with the 75 years of India’s independence and 100 years of foundation of the University of Delhi. The Department launched a logo of 75 years on 2nd October 2020, that is onset of Platinum Jubilee celebrations. Since 2020 till 2022 the Department has organised series of activities to include International Women’s Day in offline mode, International and national Webinars, Gandhi Jayanti, birth centenary of Professor Madhav Sadashiv Gore, the founder principal of the Department of Social Work (1921–2010); Platinum Jubilee Annual Days. The events have been graced by the presence of University officials, senior alumni from India and abroad and by partner agencies.
The Department continued to function smoothly with minimum impact on teaching-learning pedagogy during the pandemic, with the support of the faculty, students and non-teaching staff working under the able leadership of the Head of the Department. Various milestones were achieved including new recruitments and career advancement promotions. The UGCF for Social Work was framed with active participation of faculty from Department and Colleges and approved. The Department has been able to upgrade its resource infrastructure by renovating its office into a classroom, setting up the LAN connection in the campus, converting our committee room into a fully functional audio-visual room. The Department of Social Work, University of Delhi is one of the partners in the project RISHII (Resources for Internationalization of Higher Education Institutions in India), which is co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union.
As per the result of Best College Survey-2022, conducted by India Today MDRA, our Department has been ranked as ‘The Best Government Funded College in Social Work in Academic excellence in India’, ‘The Best Government Funded College in Social Work in Personality and leadership development in India’. We have also been ranked as ‘The Best Government Funded College in Social Work in Career Progression & Placement’ and also as ‘The Best College of Social Work in Northern India’. As per the ranking conducted by Outlook - ICARE 2022, the Department has ranked high on various parameters such as ‘The Best College in India in Academic Research Excellence’.
